On the occasion of his solo exhibition at Galerie Paris Beijing, Colombian artist Carlos Alfonso whose work is presented for the first time in Paris, and curator and art critic Théo-Mario Coppola propose a selection of videos.

This video cycle brings together films made in the perspective of a social and narrative exploration of the encounter. Sociological approach, anthropological questioning, cinematographic mise-en-scène, cross-breeding of images … the variety of processes enable to grasp the complexity of a theme that is both fragile and engaging: the relationship to portraiture. Each film presented gives access to an intimate experience, a caring and compassionate observation of the other, a story containing the conditions of the encounter itself. How does the artist bring into play, on stage and in fiction, the portrait of another one? What evidences indicate the kind of relation she/he has to the representation of others?

Theo-Mario Coppola will be reading a letter from Carlos Alfonso followed by his response. An informal conversation with the public and artists is planned following the screenings.

Metapoiesis does not use the traditional device and conception of cinema, but rather its distinct approaches –artefacts and experimentations– with the audio-visual that converge, in different degrees, towards video art, expanded cinema and film essay. In contemporary art there is no language or superior technique but the audio-visual medium –sight and sounds¬– stands out because, precisely, it can congregate the other arts. The dialogue established between different languages, places and characters is another form of strangeness and questioning, and it is also a relationship with the other arts. Latin American artists of Metapoiesis project show this mobility of artistic practices. From different parts of the world (Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Germany, Belgium, France), they review and question local, national and global issues. Therefore, the poetics of the image and the poetry that Metapoiesis foresees from a Latin American perspective invite a (self) reflection of the diverse and changing world through audio-visual art.
